Why do people stereotype southerners to be racists without even thinking about it?

It is just easier to paint racism with a southern accent. Another thing some people don't realize that Indiana was once a hot spot for the KKK. In fact one scandal in the 20 or 30's nearly wiped out either the senate, or the representives becuase thy were all connected to a Klan leader
